Fall Wedding Guest Dress

A few weeks ago, we attended my college roommates' beautiful wedding in Roswell. Everything was absolutely perfect, including the weather, which is typically miserable at best early in August in Georgia. I had picked up my dress a few months prior in TJ Maxx just for this occassion because I loved it, but I also loved it for many southern formal events. It got me thinking a little bit about formal attire during the late summer/into fall in the South. It's hot. It's going to be hot until the middle of October at least, but sometimes you want to look more fall-y and not sweat to death.

While I couldn't find my exact dress, I did find this similar one in navy which would work well for August/September. It's such a light, flowy fabric, but the flowers make it fun, and the length a little more formal. I will probably pair my dress with a fun black denim jacket like this one that I just ordered in the fall for a different, more edgy look.

My friend Michelle attended a gala last weekend in this beautiful one shoulder black dress that I had to share, especially after she mentioned it was on Amazon for under $35! I was floored--it's amazing. And it comes in some great fall colors too.

Mint boutique in Dublin has some great options as well, but I really love this green lace midi dress. The color is perfect for fall {also available in a blush rose color!}, and it's a light material that could be paired with a beautiful wrap or jacket as it cools off in October and November.

I'm obviously a fan of the lace midi dress, since that's what I wore to a wedding last October, too! A midi dress is a great choice regardless of the weather, and definitely fits well in a dressier setting. Plus, who doesn't want to get a little dressed up every now and again?

Merry Mardi Gras + Rent the Runway Review

Happy Mardi Gras!

Definitely not one of my "normal holidays" but after all the fun a few weeks ago, it may need to become one. Some of CJM's friends from pharmacy school are from Biloxi, Mississippi, and are super involved in their local Mardi Gras celebrations. They invited us to come to this year's coronation ball as Jacob was being crowned Duke and his brother king of their krewe.

Having never done Mardi Gras before, all I knew was that it was fancy...lots of sparkles and sequins. Que Rent the Runway. I thought I had a dress to wear, but I just wasn't loving it on Wednesday night; mind you, we were flying out before 9:00 a.m. on Friday. I didn't really have a lot of time to find a back up formal gown. So at about midnight, I decided to look into Rent the Runway, and I'm so glad that I did!

I packed my original dress {because a girl can never have too many options, right?} and hoped that my gowns would be at the hotel by Friday evening. So the cool thing about RTR is that you get three dresses with your order: you pick your favorite dress in the size you think you need, as well as another size {larger or smaller depending on reviews, measurements, etc.}, as well as a singular "back up" dress. For my favorite dress, I picked a gold fully-sequined Badgley Mischka dress in my size and a size up, and then a metallic cut-out Adianna Papell gown as the back up.

With the time change and our early flight, we arrived at our hotel at 10:00 a.m., and surprisingly not only was our room ready and they let us check in early, but my RTR package had arrived as well! The gowns came on gold hangers in a fabric garment bag that folds in half and zips up for shipping. I ended up wearing the back up RTR dress for a couple of reasons.

The sequin gown was strapless and really heavy, and would have scratched under my arms really badly. Plus the two dresses were totally different color golds and the one that fit me best was a really brassy gold instead of the more champagne color like the other size. Plus, the Adrianna Papell gown was so comfortable! It was an amazing almost t-shirt material but had a fab metallic sheen to it. The straps and cut-outs were comfortable and fit me just perfectly, and the slit wasn't too high. Some sparkly shoes and jewelry really set it off right.

I ended up flying home with the dresses folded up as my carry on because I'm paranoid and wanted to drop it off at UPS myself and not leave it with the hotel staff, just in case. But yes, I will definitely Rent the Runway again! It makes so much sense...I spent less than I would have on any kind of appropriate dress for that type of an event, that I never would have worn again. Plus, it saves me room in my closet which I definitely need!

Weekend Recap: October

Have you ever had an entire month overwhelm you? *Raises hand*

October.

Everyone's favorite month.

Bye...

Birthday month! So fun, right? My October was too much fun, and I was more than ready for a slow down in November to start this week.  Last month I worked a lot, traveled a lot, and went to a lot of concerts. It was one of the most challenging, rewarding, and eye opening months on record!

October started off with just a lot of preparation for the rest of the month, but things quickly picked up with our trip to Biloxi, Mississippi, for some of our friends from CJM's time in Savannah during pharmacy school. We flew out on the Thursday before the wedding and came back the Monday after. Seeing friends we haven't seen since graduation last year was so sweet. We all danced too much, stayed up too late, and played too hard; but it was a blast!

Friday let me explore the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino while CJM golfed with the guys. Such a beautiful place! Great shopping, food, and drinks, and of course the giant casino and clubs, there really was something for everyone. Friday night featured the rehearsal dinner at the Biloxi Welcome Center which was stunning. An evening of dancing later, and wedding day was here! Such an amazing event for an amazing couple.

Sunday CJM and I rented a car and drove into New Orleans. We were so close and neither of us had ever been there before, and were able to meet up with a couple that knew the area incredibly well! We got to see the highlights, and eat our fill of oysters at the Royal Sonesta's Desire Oyster Bar and beignets at Cafe du Monde.

The following week featured my busiest work week of the year including a community event for over 1,000, a music video project, and my birthday to top it all off. But the really icing on the {birthday} cake? The surprise tickets to the Eagles concert on my birthday from my amazing husband! We had so much fun! He sneakily told me we were going that afternoon, and drove us to Atlanta that evening for the best concert. Of course, we had to get The Varsity to eat on the way home.

Eagles at Phillips Arena in Atlanta--thanks, Kim, for the great shot from your amazing seats!

Chicago at the Macon City Auditorium--thanks to Tara for her awesome pic, too!

The last full week of October saw more work business, a wonderful Chicago concert in Macon {who are we? Two concerts in one week?!} and a weekend visit from the in-laws featuring a football game and oyster roast. Needless to say, we have been practicing for holiday meals and celebrations all ready!

November is going to be busy, too {birthday month for the hubs!}, but I'm looking forward to a little bit 'cozier' schedule heading into the holidays.

Being a Bride: Amanda

Amanda is one of my sorority sisters and best friends; she was also in my wedding! It was so fun having weddings back to back. I also was able to help with some of the ring shopping and picking out, which was so much fun and such an honor.

Bride:
  Amanda M. (Sharp) Johnson
Groom:  Jared A. Johnson
Wedding Date:  July 9th, 2016
Total number in wedding party: 16 (7 bridesmaids, 7 groomsmen, 1 flower girl, 1 ring bearer)
Total guests: 250
Ceremony: Marsh front in Darien, GA
Reception:  The Darien House, Darien, GA

How you met, and the proposal:
Well of course Jared and I both have different stories on how we met. My first-time meeting Jared, he was my pledge ride and I remember thinking how cute he was, how he was from a southern town close to mine, and how he was a football player, all a Win-Win! I of course attempted to talk to him the entire trip, and asked if he knew a girl I had grown up swimming with, in which he proceeded to tell me this girl was his ex-girlfriend. So of course, the truck got silent, and that’s how that awkward trip ended.

Both of our encounters were due to our best friend and best man, James Kelly, and he was also the reason for re-introducing me to Jared at an Open House at Georgia Southern. We were friends for several years, and our senior year that friendship developed into a relationship.

Jared and I had a very unconventional proposal. We had been dating about three years, and were both living/working around Brunswick, GA. The prior summer, we had talked about me applying and going back to graduate school to study nurse anesthesia. Sadly, this is not a program that can be completed online, and we were going to need to move to wherever I got in. This was extremely scary as one of the places I applied was in Minnesota... a little too cold for our southern roots! I ended up getting into my dream school of Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, NC in December, and the decision was made that we were in this for the long haul.

Being from traditional families, our parents wanted us to be married before we moved and I started the fulltime two-year program. After I got my acceptance letter, our life got a little crazy. We found out I was accepted in December, and the program was going to begin in August. Jared told me to start looking at wedding venues to fit our short timeline, and while looking at one of our favorites (a location where my sister had gotten married), Jared got down on one knee! Both of our parents were there, and it was overlooking the marsh (a setting very similar to where we did get married). Due to scheduling conflicts, we were not able to have our wedding here, but had it at my parent’s house and land instead, which turned out to be wonderful! We found out I was accepted in December, engaged by February, married in July, and moved to another state by the end of July. It was a whirlwind!

What was the best bridal/pre-wedding event you attended, and why? {Read more about the fun weekend here.}

My bachelorette party was the greatest trip ever! My sister/matron of honor, Lindsey Mote, and all of my bridesmaids, really went out of their way to make this the greatest girl’s trip. I told my sister that with all of the stress of the wedding, I just wanted a low-key lake weekend. She ended up finding a house outside of Athens, GA that was on a lake, had a pool, and a bonus of a swim up pool bar; it was a dream house! They had planned every detail for the whole weekend. We were able to hang out at the house in the pool during the day with our “bring your own float” theme party, and go sing karaoke in Athens that night. It was the best weekend ever!

What was something that made your day special?

While thinking about who would do what at the wedding, we both kind of noticed there was no big role for Jared’s father. We decided very early on that instead of him sitting during the ceremony, we wanted him to officiate the wedding! His dad was thrilled, obtained his certificate online, and was able to marry us the day of the wedding. He made the ceremony very personal to us as a couple, and it is something that we love looking back on!

What was the best wedding gift you received?

When my sister got married at a coastal location, my dad handmade the arbor under which the ceremony was held. Since this was seven years ago, the arbor had of course fallen apart by the time we decided to get married. We were on such a short timeline, so this wasn’t something that I thought my dad would be able to build in time. He surprised me the week before the wedding with this beautiful, handmade, arbor that he had been working on for Jared and me to get married under. It made the perfect backdrop for our ceremony!

What was the most unique aspect about your wedding?
We ended up having the wedding at my parent’s coast house and adjoining marsh front lot. Our ceremony was on the marsh front lot, and then the reception was back in a tent in front of our house. It is a wedding site that I don’t think anyone else will ever have, and was extra special to us due to our memories at this house. It did make it a little more stressful though since we did all of the prep-work ourselves, including me mowing my ceremony site on my days off of work... I mean what bride can say that?! But in the end, it just made it that more special for us and something we will never forget!

What inspired your wedding day?
Being on the coast, we wanted to incorporate very coastal aspects to our day. We very frequently do oyster roast at this house, and incorporated these oyster shells into our day. We had oyster wreaths on windows, had the same wreaths on our chairs, and had them tied to the silverware on all the place settings. These oyster shells made a nice memento for people to take home, and I love seeing when people use them as a Christmas ornaments! My sister is a great artist and was able to incorporate this coastal theme into our invitations with watercolors of the reception house and a map of the surrounding location. We later used these watercolors on our thank you cards as well. We were able to take wedding pictures on our dock and served shrimp and grits at our reception. We wanted to incorporate this theme in any way that we could!

Thankfully my sister is skilled in all things wedding. I mentioned that she did all of the invitation stationary, but she also did all of the flowers…and did them all at 8 months pregnant! She, my bridesmaids and most of my family members, made all of the table runners, bouquets, and arbor flower arrangements. It was nice to have that stress taken from me, and we saved a ton of money doing it this way! She now has her own flower company that she does weddings through (Lowell & Co out of Macon, GA) and I highly recommend her. I couldn’t have made it through the day without all of the hard work that she did! Also as a wedding present, she surprised us with snow cones at our reception! They went over great, and were an awesome way to help with the South Georgia heat!

How you met, and the proposal:
In the Spring of 2014, I was teaching a Bible study of women in my town. A sweet friend of mine was participating and mentioned one evening that she knew the perfect man for me. At the time, she was serving on a team with Forrest at our church, and flat out told him one Sunday morning that he should meet me. We met on Good Friday after a church service and the rest is history.

Our proposal was almost derailed by me coming down with a horrible sinus infection the day before. I stayed home from work and, to my surprise, so did Forrest. He waited on me hand and foot, took me to the doctor and tried his best to nurse me back to health. Little did I know, he planned to propose the very next afternoon! {I suppose that’s why he was so relieved when my flu test came back negative!}

Forrest told me that he’d like us to go to our local state park to spend some time enjoying the Fall weather and reading our Bibles together. While this may sound out of the ordinary to some, it seemed completely normal to me! Forrest is known for being quite the romantic- and one of our favorite things to do is spend time in the Word together. This place was also so very special to us- we had one of our very first dates there- a canoe excursion!

We walked to the very end of the suspension bridge and he pulled out his Bible, then handed me a brand- new one. He explained that he wanted to get me a surprise, and he already planned what we should read together. Again, this wasn’t out of the ordinary. Forrest knows my love for the Word, and for surprises! He opened the Bible to 1 Corinthians Chapter 13, The Love Chapter. Written at the top and highlighted in pink were the words “Will You Marry Me?” As soon as I read the words, Forrest was down on one knee. The next moments were fuzzy- lots of tears and squeals and giggles- and of course, a loud, resounding “YES!”

We spent the next hour by ourselves enjoying our engagement, then traveled to Forrest’s parent’s home in a neighboring town to celebrate with both of our families. It was a precious and joyous time we’ll never forget.

What was the best bridal/pre-wedding event you attended, and why?
I was absolutely blessed beyond measure to have seven gorgeous bridal showers. While each of them were precious and so very sweet, my bachelorette was one for the books! My best friend and MOH, Katlyn, hosted us for the weekend at her stunning home in Bluffton, South Carolina. It was a picture perfect weekend and so special having all of my best girls under one roof.

What was something  that made your day special?
One of my favorite weddings traditions in the South is the Cake Pull. My sweet aunts hosted a bridal brunch for myself and my maids on the day before the wedding and incorporated this sweet tradition for us to enjoy. For those not familiar- a cake was baked and small charms, attached to individual ribbons, were inserted in the sides. Each bridesmaid, friend and family member present at the brunch pulled a ribbon, exposing the charm that “predicted their future.” In my opinion, a cake pull is like a Southern Girl’s fortune cookie. We had the best time laughing over each charm pulled.

What was the best wedding gift you received?
During my bridal brunch, my mother presented me with a tiny box. Inside the box was a safety pin with a delicate gold heart attached. She explained that, on the day I was born, my Granddaddy purchased a necklace containing the charm. She saved it for 24 years for me to wear on my wedding day. Since we lost my Grandfather to Alzheimer’s years ago, it was incredibly precious to wear a piece of him on my special day. We ended up pinning it to the crinoline underneath my dress- it felt like he was right there with me!

What inspired your wedding day?
I love all things pretty- including- but not limited to-  all shades of pink, navy blue, gold and glitter. We wanted our wedding to feel deeply personal, yet welcoming. The rich pink of our flowers and elegant gold accents on the tables felt pulled together, yet warm. It was a dream.

What is something you couldn’t live without for your wedding day?
There is absolutely NO WAY our wedding could have gone on without our biscuit bar.   As a southern girl, biscuits are a part of my heritage! No gathering is complete with a warm plate full of buttermilk treats and jams to match. We felt that our heart for hospitality was displayed by our carefully selected menu. We wanted everyone to feel like they were sitting down for a large Sunday afternoon lunch with us.

Wedding décor/planning/survival/DIY suggestions:
Comparison is the thief of joy! Utilize Pinterest, magazines and other resources, but never let yourself get lost in someone else’s dream day.  Decide what your dream day looks like and go from there. Remember- it’s YOUR wedding day, not everyone else’s.

I also recommend purchasing a Southern Weddings Planner- it was an invaluable resource for me throughout our entire engagement. If you’re a fan of spreadsheets, lists and checklists, this is an essential item for you. Inside the planner, there are so many truths and snippets of encouragement in regards to planning your marriage, not just your wedding. Focusing on this thought got us through stressful decisions and moments of impatience.

Marrying McAfee | Let's Party!

Oh the wedding reception...one of the most fun parts of the day. After dinner, the music cranked up, and everyone hit the dance floor. We had a friend from college {DJ Hurricane Herman, what what!} DJ our reception, which allowed for a lot of personal touches and requests. He definitely played to the crowd and got a lot of people moving, which was important to us.

We took one break from the party to do the traditional bouquet toss, or throw in our case, and the garter toss. I surprised my maid of honor Kirstie by throwing the bouquet directly at her as a surprise. It was so funny. And Christopher surprised me by having hands full of ice when he went to retrieve the garter! I was so hot that I didn't even feel it for a few seconds...it just felt wonderful and cool on my legs, but it got icy, fast.

Both my maid and matron of honor gave heartfelt and memorable speeches. Christopher's best man Elijah was deployed on our wedding day, but he had two great men step in to fill that place. A few weeks before the wedding, I had messaged Elijah to kind of put the idea out there of a surprise speech if it was at all possible. He was able to record his thoughts and our DJ played it for everyone to hear, much to Christopher's surprise. I'm so glad we were able to do that, and include Elijah in our special day from afar.

My Phi Mu sisters also did the traditional wedding cheer, and I was so proud of myself for remembering to bring my candle from the candle-light ceremony announcing our engagement in the Phi Mu house three years prior, almost to the day! I'm so thankful we were able to get a picture with our fabulous photographer, a Phi Mu herself.

Throughout the reception, I could tell that our friends were getting feisty and were creating quite the getaway car. We were scheduled to leave through a tunnel of sparklers at 10:30 p.m., but about 10:15 p.m., I hit my limit. I was exhausted, hot, and just ready to be alone with my husband! So I headed back to the getting ready space, and literally laid on the couch for five minutes while the sparklers were handed out to the remaining guests. When Christopher finally made it back to the room, he asked, "How's my little introvert doing?" He knows me so well, and knew my "socializing limit" had been met!

We spent a few more minutes by ourselves with our photographer and videographer soaking in the last seconds of the day before heading out through the front door through a beautiful tunnel of sparkles. After pulling Saran wrap {and condoms...boys...!} off the car, pushing out dozens of balloons out of the seats, and stuffing my giant dress into the car, we were off! We rode back to our house to change and grab our luggage before heading to Savannah for the night. I think we both couldn't stop smiling all the way home, and kept saying how it was truly the best wedding ever.

Thank you for following along while I chronicled these memories! But no worries, the wedding features will continue, as I have the honor of featuring a few friends and blogging buddies and their wedding days. If you're interested in your wedding being featured, shoot me an email at piperellice at gmail dot com.

Also a huge thank you to all of our family and friends, near and far, who made this day the best day of our lives. We love you all!
